The Persian Khatam marquetry (خاتم) is a centuries-old form of Persian craftsmanship. It is characterised by delicate geometric patterns assembled from the finest elements of wood, bone and metal. In persischekunst.de you will find selected handcrafted Khatam works of art – decorative one-offs that combine traditional craft with timeless elegance.
During production, known as Khatam-Kāri (خاتمکاری), very fine rods of differently coloured materials are bundled into complex geometric patterns. These are then cut into thin slices and carefully applied to wooden surfaces. Sanding, sealing and polishing create the detailed surface so typical of Khatam.
Among the pieces created this way are jewellery and decorative boxes, caskets, picture frames, games and other art objects. Thanks to the elaborate handwork, every piece has a character of its own and works both as a decorative home accessory and as a special gift.
